Topic: Landfill Mining to Remediate Ground Gas – Trials, Implementation and Lessons Learnt
Presenters: Joel Heininger, Chris Sordy and Malcolm Dale - EI Australia
Former landfill sites are increasingly valuable for redevelopment in Greater Sydney. In Narellan, a brick-pit site was used to dispose of demolition, manufacturing, and construction waste. Previous environmental investigations identified elevated ground gas (CH4 and CO2) emanating from the landfill, presenting a risk to site redevelopment next to the town centre. Landfill mining was the chosen method to address the ground gas risk based on client remediation goals. The presentation presents some of the trials and challenges of the now backfilled landfill.
