“Unknown Unknowns: Using High-Resolution Accurate Mass Spectrometry as an Analytical Tool”
Bob Symons will present some insights on using a LC-QToF-MS as an analytical tool to look for untargeted compounds that may occur during a leftover chemical spill, discarded unknown chemical drums, discharges from a chemical fire and also to identify active constituents in legacy AFFF formulations. The LC-QToF-MS instrument has been around for many years but recent advances have increased the sensitivity of this technique such that it is now applicable to trace analysis and together with advances in computing power plus machine learning have reduced the data interpretation required to sift through the large amounts of data generated. Bob will go over the principles of QToF and then present some real world examples.
Bob Symons has a PhD in analytical chemistry and is Regional Technical Manager for Eurofins Environment Testing Australia and New Zealand based in their Sydney laboratory. Bob and has been working in the area of environmental organic chemistry for over 35 years particularly in the area of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as dioxins, PCBs, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and other brominated flame retardants, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and more recently pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) using mass spectrometric techniques such as LC-MS/MS, LC-QToF-MS, GC-MS/MS and GC-HRMS.
