Our presenters will take you on a journey through the basics of environmental chemistry, the classes, sources and origins of contaminants, natural occurrence, impacts of contaminants on the environment and effects of the environment on contaminants. Also, the application of how simple chemistry principles can affect the environmental behaviour of a chemical in a natural environment.
The presentation will also cover the role of laboratories in site contamination work, what labs can (and can't) do, what NATA accreditation means, analytical uncertainty and QA/QC, what 'the numbers' mean and how to manage your samples for best outcomes.
The course will be split up into two main focus areas:
Module 5A session will be presented by Alan Bull and focus on the basics of environmental chemistry.
Module 5B session will be presented by Brent Davey and will run after the lunchtime break in the afternoon and will focus on understanding laboratories and laboratory data.

Unless you majored in chemistry at university this module is for you. From graduates to seniors and principals this is the essential course for all contaminated land management practitioners.
Alan Bull is Principal Environmental Consultant at SLR Consulting Australia Pty Ltd with over 20 years’ experience in various aspects of soil, surface water, groundwater and environmental investigations, remediation and management of projects and programs in Australia and Brazil. He has also worked on natural resource management, water and wastewater treatment efficiency, riparian zone restoration with the re-introduction of endemic species. His experience also includes in depth environmental chemistry, statistical review of data, interpretation and reporting. He has managed various site assessment projects as part of urban rezoning, Environmental Audit processes and complex options assessment for waste management. Additionally, Alan has worked on a major project involving the assessment of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) present in Aqueous Film Forming Foams (AFFF firefighting foam) in surface water, sediment, soil and groundwater; with a focus on the risk of these compounds to human health and the environment.
Dr Brent Davey, Principal Environmental Scientist at Monarc Environmental (now a division of Fyfe Pty Ltd) with over 36 years of experience within the contaminated land consulting industry, a former Auditor and a former Regional Director of the Australian Government Analytical Laboratories, working on a range of site assessment, remediation and auditing projects across Australia. He is particularly interested in environmental chemistry, in biological approaches to the detection and remediation of contamination and in the impacts of contaminants in the environment.
