CPD Module 6 - Risk Assessment 29th July 2021

This module introduces the principles and methodology used in environmental risk assessment.  The focus of this interactive module is on the assessment of human health risks associated with presence of hazardous chemicals. The course is designed to target an audience of 2-5 years’ experience, or where core risk assessment knowledge is required. All professional levels welcome.

The risk assessment training will address:

  • How risk assessment fits in contaminated site assessment, remediation and management.
  • The risk assessment process which includes hazard identification, exposure assessment and risk characterisation and uncertainty.
  • Illustration of risk assessment concepts with group case studies.

The session will conclude with a discussion on a topic (or topics depending on time) of the group’s choice such as acceptable risk, risk perception and communication, guideline selection, exposure modelling, toxicology, dealing with data gaps or uncertainty, the amended NEPM, avoiding pitfalls and traps etc.

This module is designed for practitioners wanting to gain basic knowledge in the multi-disciplinary area of risk assessment, in relation to contaminated land.  The module is intended to give an overview of the risk assessment process and what needs to be considered at each stage.  The small group exercises include the use of Conceptual Site Model in the risk assessment process, the impact of data gaps and other uncertainties on the risk assessment outcomes. The case study exercise provides an opportunity for informal discussion on risk related issues and to network with other participants.

Examples of some case studies:

The case study will include the development of the Conceptual Site Model and the evaluation of the source-pathway-receptor linkages based on the physico-chemical properties of a variety of environmental contaminants such as:

  • PFAS compounds (i.e. PFOS and PFOA);
  • Petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbons; and
  • Pesticides.

Discussions will include an evaluation of the toxicological profile and fate and transport of the chemicals of concern and an uncertainty analysis relating to conducting a risk assessment.

Key learning outcomes:

  • The Risk Assessment Process.
  • What is the hazard and what data is needed to undertake a risk assessment?
  • Guideline selection – an overview.
  • How are people exposed to contaminants?
  • Does toxicity matter?
  • What is an acceptable risk?
  • Managing risk and uncertainty associated with residual contamination.

Karen Teague (Tetra Tech Coffey) has over 20 years’ experience in environmental consulting and specialises in human health and environmental risk assessments. She’s completed numerous human health risk assessments on the potential exposure of humans to a wide range of chemicals associated with contaminated soil, groundwater, soil vapour, dust, food, water, air and other media. Her most recent projects include providing risk assessment expert support for contaminated sites associated with volatile hydrocarbons, PFAS and metals, and the evaluation of baseline and future impacts to off-site receptors associated with a proposed mineral sands mine in Victoria as part of a greater Environmental Effect State report.

Sim Ooi (JBS&G) has a PhD in Toxicology and is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Toxicology and Risk Assessment.  He is a risk specialist with extensive experience in health and environmental risk assessment, the application of risk- based approaches to assessment and the management of contaminated lands.  His latest projects include undertaking and reviewing multi-pathway exposure assessments and risk assessments for sites contaminated with PFAS, radionuclides and chlorinated compounds.
